Wishes
by Bruce Holmes
If you're ever at a concert,
you are invited to sing along on the final choruses.
I let loose a sigh
As I watched her float by
Way too much beauty to bear
My heart was undone
I was smitten and stunned
Lost in the longing somewhere
A poke me behind and I turned round to find
This little man laughing and holding his side
He was bald he was small
Maybe three, four foot tall
He was quick, he was lean
Dressed in green velveteen
With a gleaming gold chain
And some flash underwear
And a ruby red cane
That he poked here and there
And these pointy silk shoes
All embroidered and blue
Had a glint in his eye
And a monocle smile
Then he twirled his mustache,
Said "Aren't you ever brash
Just do it, just speak to the lass"
Then he stood on his hands
As he chanted this dance
"So many fishes to wishes upon
So many hearts in the sea
Offer your love till it's battered and bruised
And someday a heart will agree"
I've always been shy
Letting chances pass by
Never known quite what to say
Afraid of the flame
The rejection and shame
Afraid of the price you pay
The little man seemingly reading my mind
Yelled, "Time to get off of your sorry behind
"You want skin, you want in"
And with eyes wide he grinned
Slapped his sides at the jest
Held his heart in distress
"You don't know what to do
Look so lost and so blue
You got urge wanna merge
Maybe hearts could converge"
And he pumped skinny hips
As he smacked his red lips
"Got your tongue hanging out
Full of fear full of doubt
"Cause you don't stand a chance,
She could never like you
And maybe, just maybe, that's true"
Yet under his breath
I could hear wispereth
"So many fishes to wishes upon
So many hearts in the sea
Offer your love till it's battered and bruised
And someday a heart will agree"
"So what's there to lose?
If you say how de do
Give her a chance to say yes
If your heart is true
She might even love you
Isn't the chance worth the quest?
But none of that's true
Do you know what she'll do?
She'll take your wee heart
And she'll rip it apart
"She'll smash it and bash it
She'll thoroughly trash it
She'll gnash it and slash it
Pour salt in the gashes"
He had eyes wide with fear
This maniacal cheer
He seemed quite insane
As he relished the pain
"Oh she'll hack it and smack it
She'll bust all it's gaskets
It's gruesome," he cackled,
"Your ego shellackled
I'll lay you a fortune she doesn't want you
But maybe, just maybe, she do"
And as he moved on
He left singing this song
So many fishes to wishes upon
So many hearts in the sea
Offer your love till it's battered and bruised
And someday a heart will agree
(repeat)
